Supporting work-related health for all employees

The availability of suitable tools and the deployment of preventive principles have produced positive results: work-related illnesses are rare.

Lafarge is not complacent about the good results it has achieved. As part of Sustainability Ambitions, Lafarge is going to establish a comprehensive occupational health program by 2010, with regular medical exams for all of its employees. In February 2009, a doctor was hired to undertake this task.

Acting Locally

Everywhere it has a presence, the Group works with local populations and associations to implement action programs for economic and social development, environmental protection and public health.

The aim is to exchange viewpoints and know-how and implement practical solutions that respond to local needs.

A multilocal approach

Engaging in local development

Lafarge is present in 78 countries around the world. In all of these countries, the Group helps to improve the quality of life for local populations by:

  • Acting in favor of their natural environment,
  • Contributing to local economic development,
  • Helping to protect their health and defend their rights.
  • Listening, understanding and meeting expectations

Lafarge adapts its action programs to the needs of local populations. The Group engages in ongoing dialog with all stakeholders in order to:

  • Explain its business and its objectives,
  • Keep up to date with changing needs and provide appropriate solutions,
  • Encourage populations to adopt a sustainable development approach.

Lafarge's presence extends across 5 continents on over 2,000 sites. Aware of the impact its activity has, the Group is committed to long-term integration in the local communities around its sites and contributing to their development.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to the diversity of living organisms and species in land, marine and aquatic ecosystems.

Sustainable development

The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

Sustainable development aims to reconcile 3 major stakes:

  • economic performance,

  • the social consequences of a company's actions (with respect to employees, suppliers, customers and the local community),

  • environmental aspects (achieving a balance between a company's activities and the preservation of ecosystems).

The advisory panel on biodiversity

This panel was created in 2006 to advise Lafarge on its biodiversity strategy. The group has 8 members (6 independent and 2 from Lafarge) and meets twice a year to present its opinions and recommendations.
